Abstract:  LC-MS is one of the fastest growing segments of analytical instrumentation today. This growth is largely due to new applications in life sciences and biopharmaceuticals. An important development was the demonstrated utility of the mass spectrometry (MS) technique for protein identification after 2-D gel electrophoretic separation and liquid separation. Paralleling the growth of LC-MS, over the past several years electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) has emerged as a fast growing area in the life sciences due to its utility for characterizing proteins and peptides.

The Ettan LC-MS system combines the protein purification experience and liquid chromatography knowledge of Amersham Biosciences with the expertise of leading experts in mass spectrometry and MS software (Analytica of Branford, Inc.) and in MS deconvolution (ProteoMetrics LLC). The Ettan LC-MS is a powerful tool designed to provide solutions for biomolecular identification and characterization. This presentation will focus on the role of ESI Time of Flight (ESI-TOF) as part of the Ettan LC-MS system. It will discuss how the Ettan LC-MS fits into Amersham Biosciences integrated approach to proteomics, the features and benefits of the Ettan ESI-TOF, the fundamentals of ESI-TOF and provide examples of some of the main application areas of LC-MS.
